No Guesswork, No Gaps: How Bespoke Shutters Should Actually Work

You've likely seen 'ready-made' or 'off the shelf' shutters when you've been looking into them and at first, they seem great. They're cheaper, faster, and simpler. However, shutters don't really work well with that sort of approach, or at least, not very well. The crucial difference isn't between a shutter being made for you or bought as is. It's about whether a company does everything for you or if you're left to manage the whole process by yourself.

The issue with handling this yourself is pretty clear. Some online companies will sell you the shutters, take your payment, and then more or less expect you to get on with it. You'll measure your windows, choose from a list of pre-defined sizes which may not perfectly fit, and then install them once delivered. That all sounds easy, until you're on a ladder with a shutter that's four millimeters too wide, and you're stuck for a solution.

Most houses in the UK don't have perfectly regular windows. You have Victorian terraces, 1980s semi-detached houses, and modern new builds, and they all have their own individual characteristics. Window frames will have moved a little with time, the recesses aren't quite square, and nobody has ever managed to easily measure a bay window on the first try. When you measure and then select a size from a list, you're nearly always having to accept something isn't quite right. And that compromise will become visible as a gap, a crooked fit, or a shutter that won't close properly.

Why fit matters so much: A shutter that fits correctly is a noticeably different thing to one that almost fits. It closes cleanly. It sits flush against the frame with no gaps letting light or draughts through. The louvres tilt evenly and the panels hang level. It looks, in short, like it belongs there.

Getting to that point reliably is only really possible when the shutter has been made for that exact window and fitted by someone who knows what they are doing.

Professional installation also means any issues with the window reveal get spotted and dealt with before fitting begins, not halfway through when things get awkward.

The long term picture: A well-made, properly fitted shutter is also a very long lived one. With the right materials and correct installation, you are looking at something that can comfortably last fifteen years or more with very little maintenance needed. Rooms with higher humidity like kitchens and bathrooms are where cheaper, poorly fitted shutters tend to show their age first. Warping, loosening components, fading finishes. These things happen a lot sooner when the product was not built or installed with enough care.

When you think about it in those terms, the value of getting it done properly from the start becomes pretty clear.
